Setting up your Christmas tree is easy with the right approach. This guide offers simple Balsam Hill tree instructions to help you assemble your tree quickly and beautifully. Follow these steps to ensure your tree looks its best for the season.
Before You Start
It’s a good idea to ask family and friends for help setting up the tree, as it can take around two hours to assemble and shape it for the first time. Taking your time during the set-up process will ensure the tree looks full and realistic throughout the season.

Setting up and Shaping Your Tree
The setup instructions vary based on the model of your Balsam Hill tree. Our Flip Trees feature patented technology for the quickest and easiest set-up, and our Pre-Fluffed Trees require minimal fluffing.
How To Assemble Traditional Christmas Trees
Follow these Christmas tree assembly steps for non-Flip Christmas trees from Balsam Hill.
Step 1: The tree base folds out into an X-shape comprised of four legs. Turn the eyebolt into the stand just enough to prevent the legs from folding back together.
Step 2: Insert the bottom section of the tree into the base, then tighten the eyebolt completely. The centre pole should extend straight up and not wobble. All Balsam Hill trees use hinged branches already pre-attached to the centre pole, so you don’t need to attach the pieces individually to the trunk.
Step 3: Starting from the bottom section and working your way up, shape and fluff the branches to your desired fullness. To reduce the need for fluffing, consider our Pre-Fluffed trees.
How To Assemble Flip Trees
Set up your tree by following the Balsam Hill Flip Tree instructions below.
Step 1:
Flip Trees roll out of their box in storage position, with the base section upside down on the stand. Roll the tree to your chosen display location, making sure that there’s enough space to flip it. Then, remove the storage bag, lock the wheels, and plug in the lights to ensure they all work.
Step 2:
Locate the flip path indicator arrow on the top of the flip pole to determine which direction the tree flips. Clear the flip path by pushing the branches left or right of the tree trunk for the entire length of the tree base.
Step 3:
Flip the tree by placing one or both hands on the top of the flip pole and pulling in the direction of the arrow towards you. Place one foot on the horizontal bar on the stand to steady the tree while flipping. Lock the tree into place using the safety strap at the base.
Step 4:
Attach the treetop to the base. Open up the hinged branches on the bottom section and start shaping the branches.
How To Connect Tree Lights
Follow the Christmas tree assembly instructions for Easy Plug® and Colour-Changing pre-lit trees below.
Step 1: If you have an Easy Plug tree, proceed to step 3.
Identify the colour-coded plugs and sockets on each tree section. Insert each plug into its corresponding socket with the matching sticker.
If you have a Colour + Clear tree, red stickers mark the plugs, sockets, and control box outlet of the clear lights, while yellow stickers mark the elements of multicolour lights throughout the tree.
Step 2: Plug the cord from the receiver box near the tree base into an electrical wall outlet. Then, identify the two distinct sets of lights that plug into the corresponding colour-coded extension cords. Starting with the top section, connect the extension cords to their sockets on the tree section below. Depending on the height of your tree, cords might connect up or down from a particular section. When you reach the tree base, plug the cords into the control box.
Step 3: If your tree has a foot pedal, step on it to switch the lights on and off.
If your tree has a remote, remove the plastic insert from the remote control’s battery compartment and choose clear, multi, or both to light the tree.
Frequently Asked Questions
We’ve answered more questions about setting up artificial Christmas trees below.
What Is the Easiest Artificial Christmas Tree To Assemble?
The easiest artificial Christmas tree to assemble is typically a pre-lit, hinged tree, such as the Balsam Hill Flip Tree. The branches are permanently attached to the centre pole, and you simply need to flip the tree base and then attach the treetop.
How Do You Prepare a Christmas Tree?
To prepare a Christmas tree, start by fluffing the branches to give the tree an organic and even look. For a real tree, trim the trunk to ensure it fits securely in the stand and water it immediately. For artificial trees, check that all the lights work (if pre-lit) and ensure all parts are assembled correctly.
How Do You Assemble a Christmas Tree Step by Step?
Follow these simple steps:
Unbox and separate the tree sections and stand.
Place the tree stand on a level surface, then insert the bottom section into the stand and tighten the screws to secure it.
Stack the middle and top sections, making sure they’re aligned.
Fluff and shape the branches evenly to fill in any gaps.
If it’s pre-lit, plug in the lights to ensure they work. If necessary, replace faulty bulbs.
Once assembled, add your tree topper, ornaments, and tree skirt or collar.
